The All New Range Rover Sports Car 2014 Model

ANOTHER LEVEL IN PERFORMANCE
There are a variety of all-new Range Rover Sport models available, each with its own unique features.
While Land Rover will never be the poster child for fuel economy, the legendary off-road brand in 2014 has made notable efficiency improvements in two of its bushwhacking models. Here's a look.

2014 Land Rover LR4

With an eye to retaining legendary Land Rover off-road capability while enhancing fuel economy, LR4's greasy stuff for 2014 gets a total makeover.

Our designers and engineers had one aim: to offer the most dynamic Land Rover yet. See how they took the performance of the all-new Range Rover Sport to another level.

For starters, 4 jettisons its former 375-hp 5.0-liter V-8, which generated 375 lb.-ft. of torque, in favor of a supercharged V-6 with standard auto stop/start fuel-saving technology. What the six gives up in power and grunt — 35 hp and 43 lb.-ft., respectively — it makes up for in efficiency.

Managing that engine, and contributing to its lighter appetite, is a new eight-speed automatic that adds two cogs to the six-speed transmission it replaces.

Finally, LR4's tenacious two-speed transfer case remains available for those who wish to tackle moonscape off-road trails, but that T-case moves to the options list, making way for a lighter single-speed unit for buyers whose biggest challenges are likely to involve snow-covered roads. Nonetheless, the single-speed unit retains Land Rover's techy Terrain Response system, albeit in a simpler form.

Bottom line: LR4's overall EPA mpg rating improves roughly 15 percent.

2014 Range Rover Sport

For 2014, Range Rover Sport is all new, with a primary goal of that rebirth being better fuel economy.

The efficiency program begins with a Slimfast diet that sheds roughly 800 pounds thanks to a new, all-aluminum chassis.

In addition, the base model jettisons its naturally aspirated V-8 in favor of the blown six from LR4. However, those who can't abide a six-cylinder Range Rover will be happy Sport retains its supercharged V-8 in Supercharged models.

Managing both engines is a new eight-speed automatic whose two additional ratios help both engines be more efficient.

Finally, six-cylinder Sports adopt a 4WD transfer case that's a single-speed affair, shedding pounds while still providing light-duty off-road capability and impressive bad-weather talent via simplified Terrain Response technology. The V-8 retains full rock-crawling tenacity with a two-speed transfer case, which is optional with the six.

Bottom line: The six improves mpg by a whopping 26 percent over the old V-8, while the supercharged V-8 bumps its frugality quotient up 14 percent.

“It’s dramatic. Powerful. It’s got ‘drive me’ written all over it.” Gerry McGovern, Land Rover’s Design Director and Chief Creative Officer, highlights some of the design features and attributes that define the all-new Range Rover Sport.
